U.S. Public Health Service stated a new recommendation for doctors concerning fighting against smoking. The act declares that the patients interested in stop smoking are recommended to use a new drug Chantix. The drug is considered to be the most effective to fight against smoking despite the probable high risk of depression during Chantix use and reveals the best values during clinical trials. The analysis of 83 clinical researches has shown that Chantix helped to stop smoking to 33 percent within half a year of the patients whereas at in placebo treatment this value was only 14 percent.

Varenicline (the brand name of Chantix) has been designed by pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The first sales were in 2006. Chantix is applied as a smoking-cessation remedy for adults. In 2007 Jotham Coe (chemist who invented the drug) was awarded with the Pfizer Global R & D Achievement Award, The Award for Scientific Excellence in Chemistry and the W.E. The drug works by linking with neuronal nicotinic brain receptors. Chantix is a partial agonist to these receptors, simultaneously agonizing but to a lesser degree than nicotine.
Many clinical researches (electrophysiological and neurobiochemical) conducted to investigate the drug have demonstrated that Chantix links the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and stimulates them, but to a lesser degree, than nicotine. Nicotine interacts with the same receptors. Due to it, Chantix blocks full activation of receptors under the nicotine effect. Chantix is taken orally. A recommended Chantix dose is 1mg twice a day. It is titrated during the first week as follows:
•    Days 1/3 – 0.5mg once a day

Chantix pills should be swallowed whole with water. Chantix is taken irrespective of food. Treatment with Chantix is continued during 12 weeks. Antismoking remedies are more effective, if the patients want to give up smoking and receive the additional support.
The main disadvantage of Chantix is side-effects. For example, the patients trying to give up smoking with Chantix may observe dysphoria or depression; sleeplessness, irritability, frustration or anger; anxiety; difficulty in attention concentration; low pulsation; increase in appetite or gain of body weight.
Adverse reactions usually may appear in the first week of the treatment and, as a rule, were mild or moderated. The doctor’s observance during the treatment is important.
